By Matthew Brown | Associated PressBILLINGS, Mont. — A rare attack by a river otter in southern Montana injured three women floating on inner tubes and inflicted wounds serious enough that one victim had to be airlifted to a hospital, authorities said Thursday.The attack happened near the town of Cardwell on a remote stretch of the Jefferson River, a tributary of the Missouri River that’s popular with anglers and recreational floaters.At least one otter swam up to the adult women at about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday and attacked them, said Morgan Jacobsen with Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks. By Julie Watson | Associated PressSAN DIEGO — Waves are getting bigger and surf at least 13 feet (about 4 meters) tall is becoming more common off California’s coast as the planet warms, according to innovative new research that tracked the increasing height from historical data gathered over the past 90 years.Oceanographer Peter Bromirski at Scripps Institution of Oceanography used the unusual method of analyzing seismic records dating back to 1931 to measure the change in wave height.When waves ricochet off the shore, they collide with incoming waves and cause a ripple of energy through the seafloor that can be picked up by seismographs designed to detect earthquakes. (KRON) -- A fire in the South Bay has grown to 66 acres and is threatening multiple structures, Cal Fire said Wednesday. Forward progress on the fire has been stopped and it is 20% contained. The fire is at Clayton Road and Via de la Vista, which is east of San Jose. Fire officials reported the fire on Twitter at 2:56 p.m. Approximately 70 San Jose Fire Department personnel are at the scene and a unified command has been established with Cal Fire, according to SJFD. (KRON) -- An 8-year-old boy is paralyzed after he was caught in the crossfire of a rolling gun battle on Interstate-580 in Oakland, according to investigators and family members.Asa Luo was riding in his family's car on I-580 near the Harrison Street exit when gunmen in two other vehicles began shooting at each other on July 14, according to the California Highway Patrol.
