The cost of renting has skyrocketed nationally in recent years, but could it actually be more affordable to buy a home in 2023?When it comes to major U.S. metros, there are only four where you could actually save money every month by purchasing a home rather than paying rent, a study by real estate brokerage Redfin found. With mortgage rates higher than they have been in decades, it may be surprising that any major U.S. metro could actually be cheaper for buyers. Those four outliers are Houston, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Detroit. The largest discount, according to Redfin, can be had in Detroit, where the typical home is 24% cheaper to buy than rent. The Motor City is followed by Philadelphia (7%), Cleveland (4%) and Houston (1%).In the rest of the country the balance works in the renter's favor, with an average discount of 25% monthly going to tenants. Associated PressMOSCOW — Russia’s Interior Ministry on Monday issued an arrest warrant for U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham following his comments related to the fighting in Ukraine. In an edited video of his meeting on Friday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that was released by Zelenskyy’s office, Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, noted that “the Russians are dying” and described the U.S. military assistance to the country as “the best money we’ve ever spent.”While Graham appeared to have made the remarks in different parts of the conversation, the short video by Ukraine’s presidential office put them next to each other, causing outrage in Russia.Russian President Vladiir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented Sunday by saying that “it’s hard to imagine a greater shame for the country than having such senators.”The Investigative Committee, the country’s top criminal investigation agency, ha...BottleRock: This was the most impressive set of music we heard at festival

Christone “Kingfish” Ingram had just blazed through an amazing version of the Michael Burks number “Empty Promises” when he decided an apology was in order.“I want to apologize for all those notes I played,” the 24-year-old vocalist-guitarist said to the awestruck crowd on Sunday (May 27) at BottleRock Napa Valley. “My bad.”Far from it, actually. There wasn’t a single thing about Ingram’s hour-long set on the Allianz Stage that could be described as bad — unless, of course, one is using the word as a slang term for really, incredibly, phenomenally good. Then the term definitely fits.Either way, the point is that Ingram put on a show that lived up to all the advance hype, as the Clarksdale, Mississippi resident underscored all the reasons why he’s considered to already be one of the greatest talents in the entire blues genre. His canyon-deep voice was mesmerizing and his guitar work was simply out of this world, re...Ugandan president signs harsh anti-gay legislation into law

By Rodney Muhumuza | Associated PressKAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda’s president has signed into law anti-gay legislation supported by many in this East African country but widely condemned by rights activists and others abroad. The version of the bill signed by President Yoweri Museveni doesn’t criminalize those who identify as LGBTQ, a key concern for some rights campaigners who condemned an earlier draft of the legislation as an egregious attack on human rights. But the new law still prescribes the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality,” which is defined as cases of sexual relations involving people infected with HIV, as well as with minors and other categories of vulnerable people.A suspect convicted of “attempted aggravated homosexuality” can be imprisoned for up to 14 years, according to the legislation.Parliamentary Speaker Anita Among said in a statement that the president had “answered the cries of our people” in signing the bill...This week in SF Giants baseball: What to know as Pirates, Orioles visit Oracle Park

With graduation season winding down, now may be a good time to refocus attention towards those who are earlier in the process — the ones saving for the ever-increasing cost of higher education.According to the Education Data Initiative, the average annual cost for public in-state, four-year institutions is $25,707; the cost for out-of-state students who attend public colleges is $44,014; and four-year private colleges come in at an average of $54,501 per year.Although many families are not paying the full sticker price, they still try to squirrel away some money to help defray future costs. For these folks, I continue to recommended the 529 Plan – and for the record, I did so BEFORE the advent of 5-29 Day (get it, May 29 is 5/29!), a prompt that states use to highlight participation in 529 education savings programs with various incentives. As a primer, as state and federal money for higher education dried up in the 1980s and ’90s, the onus was on families to absorb higher costs...Arquero del PSG, gravemente herido en accidente de caballo

DC Water says a 12-inch water main ruptured under V Street NE on Sunday, causing a pressure drop. (Courtesy DC Water)Parts of Northeast D.C. are being advised to boil their water before drinking or cooking, after a broken main led to a pressure drop late Sunday.D.C. Water said crews worked overnight to mend a ruptured 12-inch pipe under V Street NE, between 33rd Street and South Dakota Avenue. The provider issued the boil notice on Sunday evening after residents of the Fort Lincoln, Woodridge and Langdon neighborhoods reported a partial or total loss of water pressure.A reduction in pressure can increase the chance of the water being contaminated by disease-causing organisms. The utility said it would take samples on Monday and Tuesday, and that it might be able to end the advisory on Wednesday if no contamination is found.“We have no information that the water was contaminated by this incident, but issue this advisory as a precaution while we test the water,” the adviso...Latest news
