PHOENIX (AP) — An Arizona man is asking a U.S. court to dismiss a charge of making threatening online comments toward law enforcement days after participating in an online exchange with people who had carried out a deadly attack in Australia. A lawyer for Donald Day Jr. of Heber, Arizona, said in a filing Tuesday that the two counts of interstate threats against his client should be thrown out because the indictment doesn’t allege that Day made statements of intent to harm any specific person.Mark Rumold, who represents Day, also said Day’s online comments were not serious expressions of an intent to carry out violence and instead were protected speech under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Phoenix, which is prosecuting Day, declined to comment Thursday on the dismissal request.Six people were killed in the attack in Australia in the rural community of Wieambilla on Dec. 12, 2022, investigators said. Maine bars Trump from ballot as US Supreme Court weighs states’ authority to block former president

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine’s Democratic secretary of state on Thursday removed former President Donald Trump from the state’s presidential primary ballot under the Constitution’s insurrection clause, becoming the first election official to take action unilaterally as the U.S. Supreme Court is poised to decide whether Trump remains eligible to return to the White House. The decision by Secretary of State Shenna Bellows follows a ruling earlier this month by the Colorado Supreme Court that booted Trump from the ballot there under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. That decision has been stayed until the U.S. Supreme Court decides whether Trump is barred by the Civil War-era provision, which prohibits those who “engaged in insurrection” from holding office. The Trump campaign said it would appeal Bellows’ decision to Maine’s state courts, and Bellows suspended her ruling until that court system rules on the case. In the end, it is likely that the nation’s highest court ...

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WDAF) — Lower gas prices: That's the forecast for 2024, offering relief for drivers in the new year. GasBuddy is predicting U.S. drivers will spend, on average, $3.38 per gallon next year. That's 13 cents less than this year's national average. It's also a far cry from where we were two years ago when prices skyrocketed and drivers paid nearly $5 on average nationwide for gas. WATCH: Florida man makes ‘dirt angels’ while hiding from deputies But what's the reason behind the expected decrease? Experts say the United States is now a powerhouse in oil production, yielding more crude oil than any other country in the world. It gives the country a cushion should something happen — like a hurricane damaging refineries or OPEC cutting its supply — that disrupts oil production. "We continue to mend from things like the pandemic — which brought a lot of imbalances, a lot of very high inflation, which is now slowing down and in some cases going back," said Patrick De Haan...

It’s been a wall-rattling, franchise-shaking week for the Broncos. No matter how much coach Sean Payton tries to make the benching of Russell Wilson about beating the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday afternoon, the move sent tremors through the organization. The writing’s on the wall. Divorce is coming. It could proceed in a relatively orderly fashion or it could get messy. All the while, the Broncos have two games remaining this season and slim-but-not-snuffed playoff hopes. How does a player not named Wilson or new starting quarterback Jarrett Stidham handle a week like that? Particularly one whose job it is to protect quarterbacks?Quinn Meinerz said the task is to take all the stuff that you know, deep down, is of monumental consequence for the organization long-term and make it as simple and practical as you can in the moment.“Our job is to block and that hasn’t really changed,” Meinerz told The Denver Post on Thursday. “Who we’re blocking for has changed, but at the end of the day o...
